You Gotta Subtract First
Gotta Make Room
You can’t stack something good on top of a pile of shit, and expect it to not stink…
We all have an imagined version of ourselves that we would “like to be.”
I talk to people day in and day out about their fitness goals and journeys, and I see people who want to get better, but they continue to get in their own way.
It is usually not a lack of desire to do the work, that stops them from becoming.
It is an unwillingness to kill the old version of themselves, in order to become the new version of themselves.
See, you can have it on the schedule, you can have the perfect plan, and you can have a big desire to go forward. But if you are not willing to squash the bad habits that often get in the way of your future self, you will inevitably fail to them.
We must remove the old, the bad, the ugly, if we want to make room for the new, the good, the pretty.
This is the thing nobody wants to hear. It is always easier to see the habits holding people back in others, than it is ourselves. So we must look inward, not outward.
When we look inward, it will be glaringly obvious what we need to change. But then we must have the willingness to be brutally honest as to if we are willing to change it.
We all know our own bad habits, the shortcuts, the excuses. Our own piles of shit.
But until we are willing to clean them up, we will be stuck continuing to try to build on top a pile of shit.
Subtract, and be patient… change takes a lot longer than we think
